I have a rag rug that my grandmother made before I was born (56+ years ago). She made the pattern herself. She made a different one for each of her five children. This is the only one that remains.

I have several pieces of my grandmother's furniture. I hold these things dear.

I find it interesting that my daughter's generation are not overly sentimental about "things". It has nothing to do with the esthetics of the old pieces and it's not like they want new or expensive things. There isn't a soft feeling about something that was in their family.

Your grandparents sound fascinating. I bet they were interesting ppl to know.

I loved these memories! I have a trunk made by my grandfather. My daughter keeps her blankets in it. :)

I have a weakness for small stools and absolutely adore yours 🥰 my childhood stool / bench that my uncle made is very wonky and not as stylish as yours but it’s become my bedside table recently and people comment on how lovely it is and where it’s from… 😅 my dad wasn’t too happy when I claimed it back after it had been considered uncool for years haha

This piece made me think of so many special things, but mostly of the chair I'm sitting in as I type, one of two that my dad and I crafted together. He was a master woodworker. The chairs are a reminder of his skill, his love of and appreciation for beauty, and of the magic of those days in his workshop together. I miss him so much.

Beautiful treasures…and I love the history and stories behind them! The ship in a bottle is amazing…the time and patience he had to get it just right! Your grandparents were quite creative and talented! Thanks for sharing these! 😊🩷

I have a little woven tray made by my father at school about 65 years ago. And my grandmother's wooden sewing box. It still has her change purse in it, thread for mending nylon stockings and the button tin! Every time I open that up I can still smell her home.

This made my day. I enjoy remembering my long gone relatives, though I don't have much in a material way that is connected to them. I do have their stories, though, and cherish them always. Those are the things that will be mine forever. No fire, weather, or theft will take them from me. Thank you for this story, Charlene. And your grandfather was quite skilled with his hands nonetheless.

A beautiful letter, thank you Charlene. Reading your stories made me think of the hand-knitted baby singlet that my great-grandmother made for her babies. It was passed down to my mother and then given to me for my first child to wear. It has a delicate lace pattern at the top and still smells like lanolin. My grandparents were from a sheep farm, so I imagine the wool was spun on the farm. All four of my children have worn it and I hope it pass it down to my children. Handmade items hold so many stories and they are the 'real' treasures in our life.

Such beautiful memories and wonderful heirlooms Charlene. I’ve enjoyed reading of them so much. My father took up woodworking when he became to unwell to work, must have been in his 30s. He was not an easy or pleasant man to be around, but he made the most beautiful furniture and other woodcraft that now fill my home and my mums. The letter im hoping to share this weekend includes the grandfather clock case he built that stands in mum’s living room still and last weekend I bought home Merlin, a miniature rocking horse that he made. 💛
